Question 1: The Terms that Determine
In Chapter 9 of the Turabian manual, the authors offer a few tools for determining whether the body of your paper is coherent. Two of the ruleS stress the importance of identifying key terms that run throughout the entire paper and the terms that distinguish one section or another. What criteria can you use at this stage of the final paper to judge whether you have chosen clear and strong terms? Please refer specifically to your paper and its sections. Does this exercise force you to rethink one of your terms?
One Sentence at a Time
Chapter 11 of the Turabian et al manual provides instructions for writing concisely. Why do they ask you to “focus on the first seven or eight words of a sentence?” Why do the authors’ direct you to concentrate on the verbs of the sentence, rather than nouns, adjectives, or adverbs? Pick one sentence from the two sections of your final paper that you submitted last week and provide a revision based upon the principles contained in this chapter. Make sure to include the unrevised sentence as well as the revised version.
Chapter 23 of the Turabian et al manual provides several rules for using numbers in academic writing. Strangely, the rules seem less than intuitive. In your future use, what are the three rules that you will commit to memory and which rules will you instead leave as simply points of reference?
