Report Research Methods
Write a research proposal which identifies an appropriate research question within the context of the tourism environment.

You are required to complete the initial stages of a research project. It will involve carrying out secondary research, designing primary research and writing a research proposal.
Your choice of a research topic may be any subject which is relevant to your course of study. It is intended that the work you complete for this module may form the basis of a final year dissertation.
The assessment involves 3 tasks:
Task 1: a) INTRODUCTION – stating project title, and aim and objectives:
This should provide a clear and precise purpose for the research and some contextual background information on the topic
b) LITERATURE REVIEW – a critical summary of secondary research:
This should show that you have researched the topic from a wide range of current and appropriate secondary sources which must be referenced in the Harvard Style throughout.
Word count guideline: Introduction 300 words; Literature Review 1200 words
Task 2: METHODOLOGY – formulates a research design to collect primary data:
This should discuss research philosophies and approaches and include a critical review of alternative data collection techniques.
Word count guideline: 1000 words
Note: YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO COMPLETE ANY PRIMARY RESEARCH
Task 3: RESEARCH PROPOSAL – outlines a possible final year dissertation
Based on the work you have completed for the assessment you will write a proposal which will include a working title, clear aim and objectives for the research, and strategies for collecting primary data. It will also indicate some relevant secondary sources.
Word count guideline: there is no prescribed word count but please use the Research Proposal template as a framework.
Resubmission of Coursework:
In the event that you have been asked to resubmit the work, you are to complete the tasks as directed by the tutor with additional commentary on what you have changed in light of the feedback received from the first attempt

PRESENTATION OF YOUR ASSIGNMENT
• The work will be structured as a report
• The report will use correct paragraphing, formal grammar, tenses and spelling
• The report will be word-processed.
• The report will be formatted as double-spaced, justified and with a font size of exactly 12 in either Arial or Times New Roman.
• The pages will be consecutively numbered.
• The report will be submitted via Moodle.
• The correct cover sheet must be submitted with Task 1 only. There is no need to submit a front sheet with Tasks 2 and 3.
REFERENCING & BIBLIOGRAPHY
• The Harvard Referencing System will be used conventionally to identify all secondary research
• A conventional and complete Bibliography using the Harvard Referencing System will be included.
• For a level 4 module assessment, a minimum of six (6) references should be used.
• For a level 5 module assessment, a minimum of ten (10) references should be used.
• For a level 6 module assessment, a minimum of fifteen (15) references should be used.
• Please note that you are NOT allowed to include any reference from the Wikipedia website or from lecturer notes – your assessment may be adversely graded if Wikipedia or lecturer notes features in the referencing or Bibliography.
• Suspected plagiarism offences will be referred to the Programme Manager and as appropriate formal warnings and University regulations will be applied.
WORD COUNT GUIDELINES
• You may go 10% above or below the word count stated in the assessment brief.
o Example: 2500 + 10% = 2750 or – 10% = 2250.
• Tutors will mark the word count stated in the assessment brief (plus or minus the 10% above or below).
o Example: Tutors will mark to 2750 or 2250 as normal and without penalty.
• Tutors will not continue to mark any work above and beyond the word count in the assessment brief (plus or minus the 10% above or below). You will be penalised based on the remaining work being unread and unmarked. You will not receive feedback or marks for this part of your work.

In order for a student to gain:
30 – 39%, they must:
• Produce a word processed report which shows that the assignment brief has been met to a limited extent
In addition to the above, for a student to achieve 40 – 49%, they must:
• Provide a background and a purpose for the research
• Identify and discuss a minimum number of secondary sources
• Explain and discuss some research methodologies
• Write a research proposal
• Submit a report which follows the presentations guidelines outlined in the brief
In addition to the above, for a student to achieve 50 – 59%, they must:
• Provide clear research aim and objectives
• Analyse and evaluate secondary research from a range of appropriate sources
• Compare and contrast a number of research methodologies
• Write a research proposal which provides a clear outline for a final year dissertation
• Submit a report which is well structured and professionally presented
In addition to the above, for a student to achieve 60 – 69%, they must:
• Provide clear and precise aim and objectives with background information which supports the purpose of the study
• Present a critical review of the secondary data which shows that considerable research has been completed.
• Produce a Methodology which gives a critical review of a range of research approaches generally, and, in relation to the research project.
• Write a research proposal which provides details of the aim/objectives/methodology/sources of the research
• Submit a report which uses fluent and articulate language
In addition to the above, for a student to achieve 70%+, they must:
• Produce a critical summary of the secondary research which shows extensive research from a wide range of appropriate sources and provides a context for the primary research;
• Produce a comprehensive review, and critical evaluation of, research methodologies; a coherent justification is given for choice of approach
• Write a research proposal which comprehensively justifies the purpose of the research, and its methodology
• Submit a report which has been presented to a very high standard and which addresses all the hand in guidelines
